Tour de New River Valley - Prologue

This just in! The NRVBA in association with the avid cyclists here in the Southwestern corridor of Virginia is offering a multi-stage series mimicking the Le Tour De France (for fun). It begins this weekend! (I do believe I shall participate.) Read on for details …

Tour de New River Valley
Prologue
Saturday, July 1, 2006

08:45 – Riders sign in.
09:00 – Official start with neutral roll-out.

Today’s Prologue and Stage One begin and end in the quiet mountain village of Blacksburg, VA. The Prologue is a course of undetermined length and terrain - it’s the trip from your home to the start of Stage One, the parking lot of Notre Pain Quotidian (Our Daily Bread Bakery). As is the case with the Tour’s prologue, a basic pecking order will be established for the start of the Tour based on how early you get there!

Stage One will be a course of approximately 58 km. The stage has two intermediate sprints located at approximately 21 km and 37 km (County line sign). Sprint points for the first five riders across the line. A feed zone will be located at the 30km mark (turnaround point, bring your own food). Stage One will also feature the first mountain points of the Tour. A Category 3 climb, the Col de Ellett will give the climbers a chance to stretch their legs. Mountain points will be awarded for the first five climbers up the mountain. The ride finishes at Notre Pain Quotidian where everyone is encouraged to celebrate the beginning of le Tour with a croissant or other tasty pastry.

THIS IS NOT A RACE. THERE WILL BE NUMEROUS RE-GROUP POINTS AND THE SPRINT POINTS/MOUNTAIN POINTS WILL ONLY BE AWARDED TO RIDERS PARTICIPATING IN THE RE-GROUP POINTS. SAFETY IS A MUST AND BUNCH SPRINTS OR CROSSING OF YELLOW LINES/CENTER OF THE ROAD IS FORBIDDEN. THIS IS FOR FUN ONLY (BRAGGING RIGHTS).

For all those US and English people out there …
  • Overall distance: 58 km = 36.04 miles.
  • Sprints: 21 km = 13.04 mile mark; 37 km = 22.99 mile mark.
  • Feed zone: 18.64 mile mark.
(Gotta’ love Google Calculator!)
